Scotland was pumping this year... Day after day of swell and good winds left the surfers and photographers in a frenzy... Its hard to say how many shots were run all over europe from this years event and the happenings nearby. This little session was on our last evening before we were to race down to france the morning after. At first it was my bud Michael Bailey and I, then along came Jayce and Stokesy and we had a jolly old sesh with plenty of carnage to go round :) This bay is incredible... There are 3 epic waves all within paddling distance of each other. After a decent surf at the left (while Tim was still fimling the boys), I paddled down to the right and surfed alone for a good 40 mins and had a truly magical few waves before leaving the water to the frothing crew from the comp site...

Thank you Scotland for your constant surprises and Thank you Tim for this epic edit!

An amazing little boat trip I went on this winter... Once with dad and once with Alaric. We scored it both times but as its a completely new wave one doesn't know actually how good it gets! So we spent three days on both trips surfing all day, fishing for dinner and grilling on good old Tommy's boat which he built by hand over a period of 10 years... It brought back the true feeling of a "primitive" surf trip. We had; bread, pasta, water, a few veggies, fishing rods, good music and a few cold ones to wash it all down with. And best of all; No one around!!! Just us three...

Thank god that I only hang out with girls that can drive otherwise i would have never made my flight to france... Airport confusion led to me JUST making check-in as they were closing down the flight, but since Göteborg is such a tiny airport I luckily managed to squeak through and make it to my dad's place where my boy Klee-dogg was waiting for me...

France: After a load of french public-transport missions we finally arrive in Lacanau and were greeted by one of my best buddies Ryah Arthur who was supposed to have hooked us with a place to stay... however, as life is sometimes plan A didnt work out so Ryah, being the unbelievably kind person that he is, hooked us up with a fuckin shed aka hole in a wall in someone's back garden so Klee and myself had the pleasure of making that shed 'OUR' shed! But you know what? i wouldn't have changed a thing as we ended up having the best time and being the best crew to travel with... Frisbee golf (I still hold the record), blazing barbecue's, crazy parties with the boys and ridiculously good times made Lacanau a trip to remember even though we lived like gypsies...

None of the crew aside from Klee made heats unfortunately... I got the best waves but surfed like a willy, Ryah got unlucky, Omer got a double interference and Manuel, although he surfed like a legend, just came short of getting through a super tough heat... The level has been sooooo high that its a joke.. almost every heat had the quality of being a final.

Next was the 9 hour road trip to Spain...

Plan A (before Åhus): To spend 3 weeks MAX! at home after a long and hot winter training in Costa Rica , and spend the rest of the summer cruising round europe from contest to contest...

Plan B: After 2 and a half weeks in åhus which have felt like an entire summer, Freddie Meadows has once again fallen in love with home and am already planning my down time between contests to reside in the lovely Sweden.

Why?? Many reasons... The fact of the matter is, since I can remember, summertime has always been magical here. I live a life im not used to living but somehow feel like I should live. Åhus must be the only place in the world where I can surf once every 2 weeks or so and still feel happier than ever. Right now the Suns shining mighty in it's cloudless sky whilst ticking my precious time away. I leave tomorrow to commence my attack on the first comp this summer at my second home in portugal where i cant wait to spend some serious time catching up with my oldest/ best friend Mista Melvin Lipke. Peter Meadows'll be there, von Rupp, the Dorito, Sven (Marlon), Mr Zubizarreta etc and the list of legends goes on.

I guess you can have everything you want and need but still feel like somethings missing... Once again i've realized that thing, for me, is Åhus...

The time has come for my favorite event of the year: Scotland... Perfect Icy barrels, extremely shallow death slabs, my hooded Psychofreak, causing havoc with some of my best friends and O'neill putting on the comp of the year. It's a no-brainer!

We arrived thursday evening after our 12 hour mission across the island that is England and Scotland, to the most northern point in the UK, and were greeted by a cloudless sky and perfect headhigh draining tubes with no one in sight but my good friend/travel companion: Mr Ryah Arthur (check out our contest journal thedivinegrind.blogspot.com)... In other words life was as good as it gets...

Now, after 3 days solo in this enchanting place, the whole Top 200 has arrived and it is no longer sunny days. We shared the tiny takeoff spot at brims with around 10 hawaiians yesterday, and, as nice as they are, one is never at home with 10 pipe locals turning it into a backdoor showdown... However we all got barreled and feel good for tomorrows start of the 2010 COLD Water Classic.

Any Swedish surfer that has travelled knows what the most common reaction is to the most commonly asked question in surf travel "So, where are you from?". The response, after we randomly say "Sweeeeden", is almost always just another question "Are there even waves in sweden brah???" Baddabingbaddaboom the ice is broken and it turns in to full blown surf convo and everything else included... In my case, it usually goes down the "OOHHHSHIT it must be sooo cold" path and I then start dreaming away, getting in to details (like every other swedish surfer so don't try it!!) and end up explaining stories of when I was 14 and surfed in a semi snow storm and how pumped I was on the wind chop it produced at my local beach. I show them a few pictures from some good and average days i've had this year. Then we start looking at the next album. An epic session from last November at a left point and a slab that I shared with my good buddy Jeff. More excited now they pop the next question: "How often does it get that good?" Not often...

The majority of people think they could never do it. WAYY too cold. Especially for the irregularity of quality surf. They reckon its too cold in NorCal and they get raw pacific groundwell! So, what Im trying to say is what sweden lacks in surf, the dedication of the surfers and how stoked we get over nothing weighs it up tenfold.

My lack of updates, love and general time put into this blog in the last few weeks has not been due to lack of interest but to super busy times... I have recently arrived back from an incredible, life changing and humbling yet reassuring filming trip to California/ Baja Mexico... 1500 miles, 10 hours of digging, 2 hours in the barrel, making friends with the Mexican Army, making enemies with the american border patrol (FUCK YEAH!!!), thwarted spot searches rewarded by a couple of epic epic days and now im back in little old Santa Teresa, the place my family call home in the winter months, planning the annual 'Fiesta del Capitan' which will be blowing up tonight and couldn't be happier! :D

In other words Facegay, emails and internet all had to take the back seat whilst purity, nature and an exciting ' this is how its supposed to be' surf trip took control of the wheel and collected mile after mile in the memory banks all waiting to be cut, made up and positioned perfectly in the new Swedish surf film 'KONTRAST' which will debut at the action sport film festival Elixir at the end of april...

The dispatching starts........... NOW :)

Sweden's first only Action Sport film festival is coming to Göteborg in april. Elixir will be touring various areas and will finally finish in the capital, Stockholm. This old friend of mine, Fergal Smith, disappeared of the competition map towards the end of our pro junior careers. Many moons later, i see a shot of him pulling in on an emerald-lime green monster somewhere in Ireland. I remember being really really really impressed. I also remember hoping to bump into him one day in the near future to ask him if I could come along and have a go...

Barrel of the Season?

This year has been pretty outstanding... Swell after swell after swell and even 2 swells a week sometimes all marching in from the North/ Northwestern pacific. However there has been a catch... Its been really quite difficult to read the maps on knowing exactly which days are the golden ones and which nights you can go out and let loose after weeks of back twisting surf. Last week I had apparently missed the day of days and I swore i wouldn't let the temptations of 'Reggae Night' suck me in again...

Yesterday was a good day, but the day before was better. Close to most open spitting barrels i've had here. This year in fact has been a more or less a barrel-fest! But today, was unexpected... The charts were saying nothing special and we'd planned a latish start (8am). I walked over to the other house and cruised down through the mangrove style walkway to the beach where there sat the boys watching sets come in close to double in size from the day before. I was checking straight out front, analyzing the different peaks when something far far to the right caught my eye... Yeppp, the boys saw it to. A flawless spitting righthander just starting to do its thing... I'd seen enough. That wave had been breaking so rarely this year that I think all the frothing and perfect timing turned this into one of the 'Super-Sessions' of the season. Here's my wave of the day and possibly wave of the season at the reef!

Im sure pretty much anyone who surfs has had one of those moments out in the water when a buddy is getting a sick one or when a flawless wave glides by in all its glory and crazy colors and one just wishes they had a camera of some sort...??? I know i have. For me, waves are among the most beautiful of mamma nature's creations. It happens time and time again when i've been paddling out, duckdiving or even just sitting out on a shitty day with cool light, that i wished I had the chance to document that moment.

As you may know, Grandpa Ron, arrived about a week a go with a brand new HD Go Pro as the 21st birthday present he never got to give me (legend status!!)... I had SO much fun playing around in the water and positioning myself to get a different perspective on the whole thing. Here's a little film from Go Pro sesh #1!

I was thinking yesterday about how many cool people one meets in a lifetime. I find in my life I definitely lose track and touch with a lot of amazing people that one gets a few magic days with or shared an epic session or a part of a trip with or whatever... Whether they be good long term friends or just everyday-goodvibe people I happen to meet; I have decided to start a weekly profile/portrait to document a few of these special characters that have passed my way and deserve some cred...

This Weeks Profile: Emanuel "Manne" Haglund or Glad Im not sure... He keeps Changing it.

Manne and I met through his brother, Jonte, who happens to also be a great friend of mine, around 3 years ago. The first year, I never really spent much time with him or got to know him but as time raced on we started hanging out more and more. We started hanging out so much to the point that he has now also become a major part of blueberry visuals... Why??? All down to his ocean of talent, his super open minded approach on life and film, his generosity, his gnarly Brunella party binges that have him dogging around for days, his spontaneity, his haircuts, his random hats and, last but not least, his JamesBondSmootheSven way of slaying the entire Argentinean contingent deep in Santa Teresa... As you can tell, Manne is pretty much at Hero status.

One gets creative.. Finds new things to occupy the time spent waiting for waves... It is even possible that ones sense of humor changes and one starts finding really random shit funny... Collect all these personality changes and add the fact that, at blueberry visuals, we specialize in making films. Now close your eyes and picture us sitting on a random balcony getting all 'creative' (after a week of basically snorkeling) and somehow, in our surf deprived minds transforming an Iguana pulling its signature and most used and successful mating tactic 'the headbang', to a badass techno lizard trippin out to some typical mid day Israeli 90's electro... His playground, ( the most south western point of portugal) consists of a number of breaks ranging from long powerful beachies, all super exposed to the wrath of the atlantic, to protected inlets and coves that filter the swells to a result of groomed perfection...

Just thought Marlon deserved a little cred for ripping as hard as he does. He's a super cool and modest dude with a German head and a portuguese flare. Combine the two in the right way and you've got a pretty dangerous world tour competitor. If he lets the German get the best of him, his surfing becomes too regimented, let the portuguese side take control and he gets too dramatic... However, when Marlon happens to find that balance between the two, we get 'Ice cold drama'... And thats not to be fucked with.

So todays daily film dispatch will also be making headlines :)

The day after christmas of 2009, D&N (local club) asked none other than Mr Charlie Meadows aka DJ Medlam aka Charlie, to use his latest repertoire of banging electro beats to entertain the easily entertained crowd of christmas-happy tourists and locals alike. Charlie, 10 beers down the line, delivered an epic performance and by his 3rd tune the whole place was marching to da beat!

Me and the boys were having a slightly disappointing evening sesh (we had foolishly expected more), when none other than Mr de Souza paddled out and started surfing that beach probably better than anyone had surfed it before. The wind was offshore and the waves were 2-3 ft (shoulda been overhead!), annoyingly fast and hard to find the good ones. At first he looked frustrated and asked me if it ever got good here, but he's not number 5 in the world for nothing and obviously didn't let the frustration of being stuck in paradise for 15 days on a dodgy swell forecast affect him. He surfed really fuckin well and inspired me and surely the rest of the beach. I remember always thinking how far away that world of surfing feels from this place... Obviously not anymore, for good and for bad..

We managed to get a a couple of shots of him so keep an eye on blueberryvisuals.se for a spontaneous dispatch. Till then, here's one of the highlights of his career...

Last winter was an interesting one. A winter that will definitely go down in the books. I met some great new friends which i have now gone on to start the film production company 'blueberry visuals' with, we had loads of good waves (the best are as always not on film...) and a bunch of great training sessions with Micko in preparation for my first year on the WQS. Mick, by the way, is the dude responsible for all da footage and is a great buddy, great travel companion and an overall good guy... Anyway, here are some of the better clips from the winter of 2008-09. There might be a sequel to this one as there are still some shots left out...

Panama Waiting.

Last february, my good friend Mick and I were lucky enough to have organized the most blessed of surf trips to a small group of islands off the Caribbean coast of Panama. The entire two weeks live in the memory banks as a blur of large tropical storms, incredible barbeque burgers, Rastas, sketchy boat crossings, a guy by the name of Cookie, a guy by the name of Ivan, one love, a whole bunch of deep green barrels at a variety of surf spots and basically, it all just turned out to be one of the most flowing and enjoyable surf trips ever...

Now my friends, the Panama waiting period has begun once again!
